Redlands Unified School District Uses InformaCast In Earthquake Preparedness Event

iStock 000018008010SmallOn October 18th, over 10.6 million registrants – including thousands of schools – will participate in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill. The annual event allows people to practice and get comfortable with emergency response procedures for earthquakes.

Redlands Unified School District (RUSD) in Redlands, California, participates in the event each year using their InformaCast system. RUSD sets up a pre-recorded message to broadcast an alert across phones and speakers. Students who participate learn to recognize InformaCast alerts that will give them important safety information in the event of an emergency.

Learn How Your School Can Be More Safe with InformaCast

It’s that time of year again. Bright yellow school buses dot the morning commute, backpack-laden children walk the sidewalks, and the smell of newly-sharpened pencils is in the air.

The start of a new school year can seem as sure and predictable as the change from summer heat to autumn leaves. It is important to realize, however, that even normal situations can quickly turn into emergencies. Being prepared for whatever may arise is extremely important for the safety and well-being of students and staff.

What Football Season Can Teach You about Emergency Notification

Super Bowl XLVI attracted as many as one million people to the Indianapolis area last February. Finding a way to communicate with all those people in the event of an emergency and monitor for dangerous situations could have been an astronomical, even impossible feat ten years ago. But due to the modern phenomenon of social media, the Indianapolis city and public-safety agencies were able to make it a seamless and effective process.

University of Florida Uses InformaCast to Reach Students through Multiple Platforms

When two men with a gun were spotted on the University of Florida (UF) campus recently, it was InformaCast’s multi-platform functionality that allowed the school to notify students quickly and effectively.

School officials used the InformaCast system, which has been in place at UF for a year, to send notifications instantly to students via text message, and Twitter. This helped them reach as many people as possible.

“Some people might not get a text message, but they get the tweet,” said Bruce Floyd, UF social media specialist.

Remembering September 11th

The morning after September 11, 2001, Americans woke up in a nation forever changed from the one we’d known before. Children were without parents. Husbands were without wives. An empty hole punctured the New York City skyline. The sense of security that we’d taken for granted for so long had vanished like smoke from our collective consciousness.

In the wake of the September 11th attacks, a U.S. government agency made a request for a mass notification system from Berbee Information Networks, which would later become Singlewire Software. Our InformaCast system is the result of that request.

At Singlewire, we try to remember the reason behind our work. Every day we strive to offer solutions that will help keep people safe in any kind of emergency.

On this eleventh anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we continue to remember those whose lives were lost and those whose lives were changed forever on that fateful day.

Berbee to Singlewire - Over Ten Years of Software Development with InformaCast

Eleven years ago, a group of software engineers at a Berbee Information Networks created an application designed to send notifications on Cisco IP phones. Originally called the Emergency Broadcast System or EBS, it soon would become known as InformaCast.

For many years, customers often referred to InformaCast as “The Berbee” when talking about their notification needs. 3,000 customers later, we’re still working on improving and enhancing the InformaCast platform under the new company name of Singlewire Software.

We recently caught up with several Singlewire staff members that were instrumental in the development of the software in those early days with Berbee to record this short video.
