Power Plant Dispatches First Responders Swiftly with InformaCast

Protecting Your Most Important Asset

In every organization, the most important asset is the people that work there, and keeping them safe is a top priority. Technology is being leveraged in innovative ways to make people aware of life threatening situations and help efficiently manage a response.

Sending Assistance Where It’s Most Needed

This was the recent case at a nuclear power facility in Georgia when one of its personnel experienced a medical emergency. First responders needed to be called and directed to the area where the employee needed assistance. Given the size of the facility, this could prove challenging if the proper tools weren’t used.

However, the facility was able to utilize InformaCast, its emergency notification system to help the distressed employee. The Operations Duty Manager broadcast a message asking for assistance throughout the facility using InformaCast and Cisco phones. This immediately alerted first responders, one of whom was able to reach the employee in just a few minutes, with five others following close behind. They were able to assist the employee, who was sent to the hospital for further evaluation.

K-12 District Improves Reach of Critical Messages with InformaCast

Three Schools, One Building

Necedah Area School District, a rural district located in central Wisconsin, houses its elementary, middle and high school in one building. With 700 students and 130 staff and faculty, communicating messages to the right audiences is a crucial component of running day-to-day operations smoothly.

Kris Saylor, director of technology, had the opportunity to renovate the district’s overhead paging system, he knew he needed a solution that would provide better reach than the current analog system. With three schools in one building, he needed to be able to designate messages for the right audience, and upgrade his speakers to ones that offered better sound quality.

“We had speakers placed every six feet throughout the school, but no one could hear anything,” said Saylor.

He needed a system that was flexible, easy-to-use and reached everyone. For that, he turned to InformaCast from Singlewire Software.

Bringing Everything Together

Using Advanced Network Devices, Saylor installed IP speakers throughout the building to provide clear audio and scrolling announcements. With the help of InformaCast he and his team have been able to drastically improve how they schedule bells, configure zones and send messages.

Currently, the district has zones set up to reach everyone in the building, a zone each for the elementary, middle, and high school, one combined middle and high school zone, one zone for outside speakers and one zone specifically for the gymnasium.

This streamlined the steps needed to make a page, saving time when critical information needed to be shared. This includes scrolling text that appears on the digital displays of the IP speakers.

“What I like most is the usability of InformaCast,” explained Saylor. “It has a simple user interface and works without complications. And the potential to expand its use for other situations is very appealing.”

Singlewire Software Publishes Case Study Featuring Latin School of Chicago's Use of InformaCast for Emergency Notification

Latin School of Chicago uses InformaCast for sending school lockdown and weather alerts, locking electronic doors, and more

InformaCast LogoSinglewire Software, developer of innovative applications centered around fast and reliable emergency notification, today announced the release and publication of the case study, “Latin School of Chicago: Coordinated Notifications and Lockdown.”

The case study features Latin School of Chicago, a private K-12 school located in the heart of the city. The school, which was founded in 1888, is an established part of the community and has ties with several local organizations.

Latin School of Chicago implemented InformaCast to immediately alert staff and students in the event of an emergency. With the touch of a button, the system can send text and audio notifications to all of the school's Cisco IP phones and broadcast audio to overhead speakers in the school's multi-building campus. Administrators also receive automatic email notifications whenever an emergency message goes out, which helps staff members respond faster. InformaCast also integrates with the school's automatic/electronic door lock system to remotely lock doors in the event of a shelter-in-place emergency.

Redlands Unified School District: Reliable School Bells and Overhead Paging

The Redlands Unified School District in California relies on InformaCast to keep their schools running

Redlands LogoThe Redlands Unified School District (RUSD) serves several diverse communities in Redlands, California. The district has 16 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 3 comprehensive high schools, a continuation high school, an adult education high school, and district facilities. There are approximately 21,400 students and 1,600 staff in the district.

RUSD needed a bell, paging, and alert solution for their new high school and elementary school that was built with a one-wire Ethernet infrastructure.

“We needed a reliable, solid solution that would allow for bells and paging over the IP network,” says David Massaro, Coordinator of Technology Services at RUSD. Since RUSD is a large district that consists of several separate school buildings, they also needed to be able to communicate between locations across the district.

Brandeis University uses InformaCast for Campus Wide Emergency Communication

brandeisThe Client
Brandeis University is a leading university outside of Boston with a total student enrollment of approximately 5,600 and about 1,500 faculty and staff members.

The Business Challenge
In the wake of the tragedy at Virginia Tech in April 2007, universities across the country were confronted with the need for improved all-campus communication. Brandeis University didn’t waste any time. Its Crisis Communications Team immediately began to seek out the best solution for the campus.

John Turner, Brandeis’ Director of Networks and Systems, remembers that parents were asking a lot of questions: “What are you doing for communication? How are you going to let our son or daughter know of a crisis? What other mechanisms do you have?”

Christopher Columbus School Extends Overhead Paging with InformaCast

CCHSThe Client
Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, FL, is a private, college preparatory high school. Conducted by the Marist brothers, CCHS has been providing educational excellence since 1958 and currently has an enrollment of approximately 1,400 students and a campus spread out across four main academic buildings on 19 acres.

The Business Challenge
In 2007 Christopher Columbus High School owned both an analog two way paging system and a separate system for scheduling and maintaining their school bells. The paging system was starting to fail in some of the classrooms. The bell system had to be programmed manually by one of the few employees that understood how to use it. In addition, each clock throughout the school had to be synchronized by hand including the two times per year when the time changed due to daylight savings time.

At that time the school was beginning work on a new technology center, and it was time to take a serious look at replacing the old system that was in place. “Since we were in the process of constructing the new Mas Technology Complex we decided to take a look at what would be best for the school as a whole at the time and in the future” explains Elena Alvarez, the Technology Director at Christopher Columbus High School. They were looking for a system that would integrate all of their technology and make use of their existing Cisco phone system, as well as allow them to communicate efficiently throughout the school and across its multiple buildings.
