Sending Emergency Notifications to Police Radios with InformaCast

This is the final entry in a three-part series highlighting how Cisco phones and InformaCast work together to improve school safety. Read parts one and two.

Communicate Directly with Police

When an emergency occurs, schools depend on a quick police response to help manage the situation. Schools need tools that communicate directly with law enforcement officials to efficiently request assistance.

Local police often donate a radio to schools to provide a direct line of contact. As Kevin Holcomb, Technical Marketing Engineer for Cisco, explains in this video, Cisco and InformaCast help school officials reach law enforcement quickly during a crisis.

Healthcare Facility Simplifies Paging with InformaCast

Keep Key Personnel Informed

Safety and security is important for any organization, but InformaCast customers use our mass notification software to keep personnel informed about all kinds of events. Aspirus in northern Wisconsin deploys InformaCast across its facilities to standardize paging procedures. This has led to faster response times since staff only need to press a button on their Cisco phones to initiate a message.

Download the case study

At Aspirus, InformaCast is used for Critical Code Blue paging. The staff at Aspirus is sensitive to the stress families endure when loved ones go in for surgery. Under the previous paging system, messages were heard throughout the whole hospital. But with InformaCast, staff can be more selective about where the message is heard. That means medical personnel are informed without causing unneeded stress for families.

Wahsega Labs' InformaCast-Enabled Speakers Aid Tampa Bay Schools

Singlewire Partner Helps K-12 Schools

Over the summer, schools in Tampa Bay reassessed their speaker and zone controller needs and installed Wahsega Labs’ Two-Classroom 2x2 Ceiling Speaker. These cost-effective speakers integrate with InformaCast to provide a secure learning environment.

The Two-Classroom 2x2 Ceiling Speaker features a two-way intercom with the ability to broadcast emergency alerts and control door locks from InformaCast. One Power-over-Ethernet run supports Wahsega speakers in two separate classrooms, conserving equipment and labor costs while reducing the amount of equipment to manage.

Newburgh, NY Utilizes InformaCast to Prevent and Reduce Crime

InformaCast has been helping government personnel keep people safe since its inception. From national government agencies to smaller local government buildings, emergency notifications from InformaCast help share critical information during potentially dangerous situations. The city of Newburgh, NY deployed InformaCast in its City Hall, and State Tech Magazine highlighted their efforts in a recent article.

The following passage was originally published as part of larger piece in State Tech Magazine on July 14, 2016.

With the Cisco UC system deployed, Newburgh’s IT team will now add Singlewire Software’s InformaCast IP paging and emergency notification features. The fire, public works and water departments are already using it; the police department and the city’s other first responders are next.

The software allows city officials to preprogram specific alerts — or send new messages on the fly — through their IP phones or computers. For example, the fire department has deployed an overhead paging system that enables fire officials to pick up a phone and broadcast announcements to every phone at headquarters, Kurcon says.

By the end of the summer, the IT department plans to preprogram specific alerts on speed dial. With the city’s previous system, the alarm company provided no details to police other than the fact that an employee pressed the silent alarm. The new system can provide greater event details, including the specifics of what’s happening as well as location information.

Utilize the Tools to Reach Everyone in Your School

Making the Difference in K-12

As schools let out for the summer, planning is already underway for next year. Part of that planning should include a review of your mass notification system. Schools needs to assess their capabilities for reaching everyone during an emergency. Pat Scheckel, senior vice president of marketing at Singlewire Software, recently contributed an article to the K-12 outlet, EdTech Digest outlining how an easy-to-use notification system is a critical component for K-12 school communications.

The following story was originally published on June 21, 2016 by EdTech Digest.

During a school emergency, time is crucial. Whether its an injury, intruder or active shooter, notifying personnel of the situation in a timely manner to start responding and managing the crisis can make all the difference. But, it’s not just about having the proper procedures in place, it’s about having the tools to reach everyone, wherever they are in a building or campus. To help with this challenge, many schools are implementing emergency notification systems are to bring together disparate systems and notify everyone. However, with rapidly changing technologies, it can be difficult to know which solution will be the best fit for your school.

Schools should look for systems that are easy to use, offer multiple message options for notifications, alerts to help manage almost any scenario, and new technology that leverages investments in existing systems.

Easy to Use

In an emergency situation, asking for help should be as easy as a push of a button. Whether that’s a discreet panic button, a built-in feature on a desk phone or the swipe of a smartphone, the last thing you want is for people to worry about remembering a complex set of steps to trigger a notification. It’s also important to utilize a system that can send to multiple communication methods with a single push. Systems that offer the ability to build groups make it easy to notify everyone on multiple devices without the need to draft and send separate messages.

Multiple Message Types

When sending a message, it’s important to be able to provide the appropriate amount of context. Look for a system that lets you send text, audio, and images to give your staff the information they need to manage the situation. SMS, push notifications, email, desktop notifications and text to speech functionalities help ensure messages reach everyone, wherever they are.
